The Making of a CMMNTY T-Shirt

Each item CMMNTY produces is a limited edition art piece, so it stands to reason that a lot went into the T-Shirts. Made exclusively for CMMNTY in Portugal on strictly organic jersey (more on that later), we paid attention to every detail in order to make the best quality ethically responsible T-Shirts possible.

All our T-Shirts are made with Portwood Cotton™, so named for its specially developed cotton and triple-wash jersey. The triple-wash process results in a soft hand feel and a long lasting garment that keeps its shape. Each item is made to a strict quality standard and features bar tacks to reinforce stress points. We’re old friends with the folks heading up Portwood and they’ve been at it for 15 years or so… we’re in good hands.

Hand Printed in the UKThe CMMNTY tees are designed with bound collars, flat lock overstitch details, stitch-down canvas labels and a washed finish all to give them a comfortably worn look and feel. The washed black and off white colour-ways are then printed by hand in the UK in strictly limited runs of 30, either using discharge screen printing or a digital fabric printing process for highly detailed full colour artworks.

GOTS CertificationAll well and good, but why use organic cotton? It’s not like you’re eating it. Well, apart from the ecological reasons (Less artificial pesticides, fertilisers and insecticides means cleaner run-off and less pollution) using GOTS certified cotton guarantees ethical manufacturing, social accountability and overall sustainability. Which means none of that shady sweatshop business, basically. You can read more about GOTS here.

Finally, the T-Shirt is returned to CMMNTY to examine and package up in its own protective cardboard cylinder, before eventually being stored for posterity in the CMMNTY archive with its 29 counterparts.
